One of the perks of having knitting for a hobby is that it travels well. This makes it easy to knit pretty much anywhere. There is a phrase with in the fiber community that says, “If I’m sittin’, I’m knittin’.” And depending on the size of your project, you plan on the size bag/purse you take with you. I’ll go through a series of posts, showing you some of my favorite places to knit.
First up…as we’re getting into summertime…the beach.
Knitting and the beach? Really? Isn’t it too hot?
As mentioned earlier, “If I’m sittin’, I’m knittin’.” Lounging in a beach chair, the breeze coming up off the water, the calming sounds from the ocean lapping up on shore…sounds like the perfect place to get some knitting in to me. Yes, with the heat from the sun beating onto the sand, I still like to knit.
Many people, when they think of yarn, they only think of heavy, thick wool that’s itchy and hot. I’m happy to say, yarn is made from so many different materials. When packing for a trip to the beach, I make sure the project I take is a small, lightweight project. Cotton, bamboo and linen are great materials to take to the beach, along with the acrylic yarn I use for the hand knit plants.
Having a beach tent helps provide some shade, so the yarn is not in the sun too long. It also makes knitting the biggest project I’d take to the beach more enjoyable as well…a shawl.
So, if you catch me at the beach, more than likely I’ll be knitting…or it’s not too far away. Because the beach is a place you can knit.
